Purpose:
The Associate Pastor for Family Life and Discipleship assists the Pastor and the Church in fulfilling the Great Commission by leading teams in ministries for children, youth, and their families; by leading discipleship ministries; and by assisting with the pastoral ministries of the church.
 
Rationale:
As our culture becomes increasingly hostile toward Christianity and a biblical worldview, children and families are routinely confronted with unbiblical and even dangerous ideologies.  This ministry position provides FBCS with a key leader to help children and families cultivate and apply a biblical worldview, to meet the challenges of the culture, to reach families for Christ,
and to participate in and foster a healthy church for the future. 
 
General Characteristics and Expectations:
1) A clearly articulated salvation experience and commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
2) A clear call and commitment to full-time Christian ministry.
3) A commitment to the authority and inspiration of the Bible.
4) A commitment to Southern Baptist principles and practices.
5) An affirmation of the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 and its statement on the biblical definition of a family.
6) Demonstrated relevant experience in the local church.
7) Relevant education and training for ministry.
8) A demonstrated ability to relate to families and reach them creatively.
9) A commitment to the biblical mandate of evangelism and experience in sharing the Gospel.
10) Professional competence and a commitment to excellence in ministry.
11) Demonstrated gifts and skills in teaching and in leadership.
12) A willingness to work within guidelines, policies, procedures, and the budget of the church.
13) A commitment to character traits expected of Christian leaders, such as punctuality, humility, integrity, honesty, and purity.
14) A willingness to work closely with the Pastor and other members of the Ministry Team to carry out the goals and vision of the First Baptist Church of Shallotte.
 

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities Related to Family Ministries:
Serve as the key leader for all ministries for children, youth, and families utilizing a team ministry
approach. Duties include but are not limited to:
1) Giving oversight, leadership, and guidance to the Children’s Ministry Team (CMT) and the Youth Ministry Team (YMT).
2) Developing ministries for children, youth, and families.
3) Implementing strategies to reach and disciple families.
4) Working closely with parents and church leaders to provide ministry to families.
5) Helping parents and youth engage in ministry.
6) Providing and overseeing opportunities for parents and children to cultivate a biblical worldview.
7) Overseeing, participating in, and promoting outreach through events and ministries
related to families and kids of all ages, including but not limited to a Fall Festival and
Spring Carnival or similar events that reach children and families.
8) Utilizing and/or overseeing the Family Life Center for ministry opportunities.
9) Building healthy relationships with families and kids of all ages.
10) Leading Bible studies, when needed and alongside the CMT and the YMT.
11) Seeking opportunities for youth, children and families to grow in fellowship and grow
spiritually, such as retreats, camps, and other off-site events.
12) Seeking opportunities to engage single households and single parents in ministry and the
life of the church.
13) Representing the church to the community as a member of the Ministry Team.
 
Responsibilities Related to Discipleship:
As an extension of the Family Life ministries, the Associate Pastor will work with leaders to:
1) Guide and plan the DiscipleLife ministries.
2) Implement D4 and other small group discipleship opportunities.
3) Foster discipleship ministries for families.
4) Oversee ministries engaged in The Gospel Project.
5) Work with the Church Missions Coordinator to create and implement national and
international missions opportunities and encourage participation.
6) Coordinate and implement leadership training with the Pastor.
 
Responsibilities Related to Pastoral Ministries:
Participate with and assist the Pastor in the pastoral care of the congregation and community when needed, including the visitation, counseling, and benevolence ministries. Duties include but are not limited to:
1) Providing counseling to church members as needed.
2) Being available to church members in times of crisis and/or need.
3) Being available to all church members/attenders as needed for pastoral care.
4) Participating in the life of FBCS as a member of the church.
5) Seeking to build positive relationships with all church members.
6) Preparing for and attending all staff meetings.
7) Attending the regularly scheduled services and events of the church.
8) Participating in worship services as needed for preaching, teaching, or leading worship.
9) Serving as a member of the Church Leadership Team.
10) Promoting the health and growth of the church and offering ideas for the advancement of all areas of ministry.
11) Contributing to healthy relationships within the FBCS Ministry Team (staff).
